Standard 5 - Teachers create and maintain safe and challenging work environments
One of our key responsibilities as educators is to provide a safe environment for students in our care. It is important to create a secure school community to ensure students feel and be safe to flourish in a positive and constructive setting (Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs, 2011).
Rose (as cited in Carrington & Saggers, 2008), notes educators “...need to examine issues, biases, prejudices and assumptions we carry into the classroom and how these inform and influence our classroom curriculum”.
I have included artefacts from both my placement and university course. These are examples of my understanding and commitment to ensuring the students who are in my duty of care are safe and challenged.
Relationships between teachers, families and students are vital to creating an inclusive, caring and safe environment. The school community and the sense of belonging that results from students’ families and students’ teachers working together in partnerships are influential and predominantly beneficial to individual and whole-class student achievement (Epstien, 2010).
Environments; in a physical and non-physical sense must offer a challenging learning space for students with diverse backgrounds and abilities to coexist as individuals without judgment. It is imperative to provide opportunities to produce positive relationships with their peers and teachers, to feel connected to their school and community, and gain knowledge and skills to facilitate life-long endeavors (Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs, 2011).
